Verbs #1 Rootwords & Tenses
Hello everyone. Kumusta po kayo? Today we will have an overview of verbs, how they are changed from one tense to another.
Rootwords.
Takbo (run)
Lakad (walk)
Kain (eat)
Bili (buy)
Kanta (sing)
*these can be used as interjections.
Police: TAKBO! (run!)
Saleslady: Bili na po kayo!
Teacher: Kanta na....
Anyway, back to tenses.
First letter + um + rest of the word
Takbo
T + um +akbo = Tumakbo (ran)
Lakad
L + um + akad = Lumakad (walked)
Kain
K + um + ain = Kumain (ate)
Bili
B + um + ili = Bumili (bought)
Kanta
K + um + anta = Kumanta (sing)
You see that they are in past-tense.
Tumakbo siya. (He/She ran)
Lumakad kami. (We walked)
Kumain ako. (I ate)
Bumili ako ng damit. (I bought clothes)
But they are also used in ordering / requesting people to do something. I can't explain.
Tumakbo ka muna sa palengke. (Please run to the marker first)
Lumakad ka na (Please go now)
Kumain ka na. (Eat now)
Bumili ka na ng notebook. (Buy notebook now)
Present: Initial Letter + um + second letter + rootword
Takbo
T + um + a + takbo = tumatakbo
Lakad
L+um+a+lakad = lumalakad
Kain
K + um + a + kain = kumakain
Bili
B + um + i +bili = bumibili
Kanta
K + um +a + kanta = kumakanta
Sample sentences:
Kumakain pa ako. (I am still eating)
Tumatakbo siya. (He/She is running)
Kumakanta si Charice. (Charice is singing)
Bumibili si nanay ng pagkan. (Mother is buying food.)
I hope you understood that, remember that + um is not applicable to all verbs, (I am not good in Filipino so I don't know what they are called). Other verbs have different rules. They will be discussed in future lessons.
