Common Phrases #1 Let's ____ 



Hello everyone. Kumusta po kayo? 
Today we will study how to "invite" someone to do something.
In English, "Let's ___" is used. In Filipino, you could say it in different ways. 


Here are some examples. Again, sentences with "po" are polite.


Let's eat! (Kumain po tayo)
Kain po tayo!
Kain tayo!


Let's sing! (Kumanta po tayo)
Kanta po tayo!
Kanta tayo!


Let's us leave *now*. (Umalis na po tayo)
Alis na po tayo.
Alis na tayo!


Let's sleep *now*. (Matulog na po tayo)
Tulog na po tayo.
Tulog na tayo.


Let's go somewhere *literally: let's wander off*. (Gumala tayo)
Gala po tayo.
Gala tayo.


You can add "Tara" before each sentence too.


Tara, kain tayo!
Tara, alis na tayo!
Tara, tulog tayo! 


Taglish Phrases.. note that these are informal.
You would not find Filipino poets speaking this way. Ever.


Let's party. (mag-party tayo)
Party tayo.


Let's go / eat at McDonald's (mag-mcdo tayo)
Mcdo tayo.


Let's go to the mall.
Mall tayo.


Let's review *our lesson* (mag-review tayo)
Review tayo.


**THESE PHRASES AREN'T FORMAL.
Remember our lesson about adjectives?
Magaling tayo -> We're good.
Matalino siya -> He/She's smart.


So does why do these ___ + tayo mean "Let's ___" instead?
Shouldn't they mean?
Kanta tayo -> We're a song (?!)
Tulog tayo -> We're sleep (?!)


Actually, they should be:
Kumanta tayo. -> Let us sing.
Matulog tayo -> Let us sleep.


But people are lazy, so they use the rootwords, omitting "mag-", "um", and "ma".


Example (why short version is actually grammatically wrong)


Girl 1: CR tayo! 


*sarcastic meaning: We are CRs (comfort rooms)
*proper sentence should be: mag-CR tayo -> Let's (use / go to) the comfort room.


Girl 2: Huh? Tao ako. (I am human)


*Girl 2 took Girl 1's sentence sarcastically. obviously in a teasing mood*
